‘ISKCON food and eggs will also be available…’, mid-day meal controversy stopped in Bengal, this is how the government found a middle path

July 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The mid-day meal controversy has stopped in Bengal. For this, the government has found a middle path and put an end to the allegations of the opposition. Now students will get eggs separately along with ISKCON food. This decision was taken when the government had given the responsibility of preparing and distributing mid-day meals in Kolkata schools to ISKCON.

The opposition had strongly criticized this decision and alleged that if BJP came to power, children would not get eggs. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari said that eggs will remain a part of the mid-day meal to ensure that children get adequate protein.

Eggs will also be distributed separately to students- CM Shubhendu

Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari said that a trial project will be started in most of the schools of Kolkata from August 1. In this, ISKCON will provide pure Satvik and protein rich food to the children. Apart from this, eggs will also be distributed separately through self-help groups, so that children can get adequate protein.

According to the new arrangement, ISKCON will provide vegetarian Satvik food, while eggs will be provided separately by the self-help groups. This announcement has been made to address concerns that children will continue to receive eggs even after the introduction of ISKCON meals. With this, parents can be assured that their children’s nutrition will be good.

What is the whole controversy about mid-day meal?

The Bengal government has given ISKCON the responsibility of preparing and distributing mid-day meals in the government schools of Kolkata under a pilot project. ISKCON serves only Satvik and vegetarian food. Due to this, it was said that eggs should be removed from the menu and cheese, kidney beans and soybeans should be included. The opposition and critics allege that fish and eggs are the main sources of protein in the traditional food culture of Bengal. This was said to be an attempt to forcibly impose vegetarian food. After this, the government has decided to give eggs separately to children in their diet.
