After the Iran war, the world is now eyeing the increasing tension on Taiwan. China has continuously increased its military presence around Taiwan in the last few years. The situation has become such that now 5 to 6 warships of the Chinese Navy surround Taiwan from all sides almost all the time. Even at the end of May 2026, several Chinese warships, including large guided-missile destroyers, were deployed in the north, south, east and Taiwan Strait of Taiwan. This was not a military exercise, but has now become a part of China’s regular strategy. This information has been given by Wall Street Journal quoting security officials.
How was the circle extended?
China did not suddenly surround Taiwan, but gradually increased its presence. In 2020, China began regular warship patrols in the Taiwan Strait. Along with this, two more ships were deployed near the north and south coast of Taiwan.
In 2022, a fourth warship was deployed off the east coast of Taiwan. This made China’s naval presence around Taiwan almost permanent. From 2024 onwards, China also started regularly deploying the fifth and sixth warships in the eastern region. Now 5 to 6 Chinese warships are present around Taiwan. Their number increases further during any special campaign or stress.
What is China’s objective?
Experts say that China is not only demonstrating power, but is also preparing for a possible war. Earlier China used to use small warships for patrolling, but now large and modern guided-missile destroyers are being deployed in their place. The Chinese Navy currently has 48 such destroyers.
attempt to gather intelligence
By continuously being present near the eastern coast of Taiwan, China is preparing a map of the depth and marine area of the sea. This will help him in future to find the hiding places of enemy submarines. Besides, it is also keeping an eye on the activities, communication system and military deployment of Taiwan’s army.
Strategy to keep America away
There are important military airbases like Hualien and Taitung in the eastern part of Taiwan. By deploying its warships near these areas, China wants to make it difficult for the aircraft carriers, submarines and military ships of America and its allies to get close to Taiwan.
China is regularly flying military flights crossing the center line of the Taiwan Strait. Aggressive activities against foreign ships have also increased. Experts believe that by continuously applying pressure without starting a war, China wants to send a message to Taiwan that it will be difficult to resist its occupation in the future.
