After the US-Iran war that lasted for almost four months, the question is arising as to who won this war. US President Donald Trump has called the agreement ending the war a major success, but many military and foreign policy experts do not agree with this. American magazine Newsweek took opinion from 10 experts in this regard. Most experts believe that despite suffering military losses, Iran has gained strategically.
During the war, America and Israel caused heavy losses to Iran’s army. Iran’s navy was almost destroyed, its air force was also damaged and its missile and nuclear programs suffered a major setback. Many senior military officers and leaders also died. Despite this, the Iranian government remained in power and the regime did not change.
Iranian power got the biggest benefit
Burku Ozcelik, an expert at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, says that in this war, not the common Iranian people, but Iran’s ruling class benefited the most. According to him, fundamentalist forces in Iran have become stronger after the war. At the same time, this message also went to countries like China and Russia that America is not always able to convert its military strength into political success.
Professor Melanie Garson of University College London believes that Iran can now claim that it faced US and Israeli attacks, maintained its influence over the Strait of Hormuz and in return obtained concessions such as funds for reconstruction, relief from sanctions and the return of seized assets.
Some experts did not consider anyone the winner
Some experts, such as former Pentagon official Jim Townsend and Michael O’Hanlon of the Brookings Institution, say there is no clear winner in this war. According to him, both sides got some success, but both had to suffer losses also. America’s global image suffered a blow, while Iran’s economy and military capabilities weakened.
At the same time, Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies believes that America is in a better position in some respects. According to him, America destroyed Iran’s navy, damaged its missile production capacity and pushed its nuclear program back by several years. But he also acknowledged that Iran still maintains missiles, drones and influence over the Strait of Hormuz.
Many of America’s major goals remained unfulfilled
Many experts emphasized that the agreement ending the war did not provide any clear solution to issues such as Iran’s ballistic missile program, regional allies and regime change. These were the main goals of America.
Overall, most experts believe that America certainly achieved military success in the war, but it could not fulfill all its political and strategic goals. On the other hand, despite suffering heavy losses, the Iranian regime remained in power. For this reason, many experts consider Iran to be the biggest strategic winner of this war, while some say that this was a war in which no side could win completely.
