Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has made a big accusation against Iran. He said that Iran is using Lebanon as a bargaining tool in its ongoing dispute with America and Israel. In an interview with CNN, Aoun said that the people of Lebanon are fed up with the continuous war and now want peace. The people of Lebanon deserve to live with dignity and security. They do not want to see their homes destroyed every few years.
In fact, Hezbollah, formed with the support of Iran in the 1980s, has fought wars against Israel several times. This year too, after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel. After this Israel carried out large-scale attacks in Lebanon. More than 3,500 people died in these attacks and about 20% of the country’s population had to leave their homes.
Efforts to reduce the influence of Hezbollah
The Lebanese government has long been struggling with foreign interference, sectarian tensions and regional conflicts. Aoun said his government is trying to control Hezbollah’s weapons and reduce its influence, so that the conflict with Israel can end.
Taking aim at Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the President said, this is not your country, it is our country. Iran is using Lebanon in its talks with America. The people of Lebanon are paying the price. Our interests and Iran’s interests are not the same.
Lebanon ready for direct talks with Israel
Aoun said that his government is ready for direct negotiations and a ceasefire agreement with Israel. He believes that Lebanon and Israel have a big opportunity to end their decades-old enmity. He said that the people of both the countries have been facing conflict since 1948 and now they should choose the path of dialogue and diplomacy and not war.
However, Hezbollah chief Naim Qasim has rejected the Lebanon-Israel talks as surrender. Qasim says that Hezbollah will not give up its weapons until the Israeli army leaves Lebanese soil.
The problem will be solved through talks: Aoun
Aoun, a former army chief, said that he himself has suffered the pain of war and even today the shrapnel from the war is present in his body. Despite this, he believes that the best solution to any problem is not war, but dialogue and diplomacy. He said that he will continue to try to convince Hezbollah and find a solution through dialogue, even if this path is not easy.
