Indonesia will buy BrahMos batteries, defense partnership will be strengthened

July 6, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a very special three-day visit to Indonesia (July 6 to 8) from Monday. During this visit, a big deal can be finalized between India and Indonesia regarding the purchase of ‘BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile’. Defense experts believe that after this deal, China’s arbitrariness in the Indo-Pacific region will be completely curbed.

According to information received from defense sources, Indonesia After the initial agreement signed in March 2026, it now wants to buy more BrahMos missile system (additional batteries) from India.

The first deal was worth about 200 to 350 million dollars (about Rs 1,600 to 2,900 crore), which was for coastal defence. Now preparations are on to take this deal to the next stage.

Why is this deal special?

It is impossible for the enemy to escape: BrahMos, jointly developed by India and Russia, is the world’s most dangerous supersonic missile. Due to its range of more than 290 kilometers and speed faster than sound, it is impossible for the enemy to stand in front of it.

Indonesia’s compulsion and need: Indonesia is a country of more than 17,000 small and big islands. To protect its maritime borders, it is in dire need of an accurate missile like BrahMos.

‘BrahMos Belt’ against China: After the Philippines, Indonesia is going to become the second South-East Asian country to buy BrahMos from India. Talks with Vietnam are also in the final stages. This means that a ‘BrahMos Belt’ of friendly countries is being prepared around China.

In this visit, there will be not only discussion on selling missiles, but Indonesia also wants some technology related to missiles (Transfer of Technology). Apart from this, Indonesia has huge reserves of precious metals like nickel, which are used in making defense equipment. Many important agreements (MoUs) regarding these minerals can also be signed during this visit.

India’s ‘Act East Policy’ will get strengthened

This visit of Prime Minister Modi will give a new direction to India’s ‘Act East Policy’ (strong relations with eastern countries) and the strategic partnership of the two countries. Defense sources say that both the countries are continuously working together on maritime security, joint military exercises and advancing the defense industry.
