A major road accident occurred in Java, the main island of Indonesia. The accident occurred when a pickup carrying people returning from a wedding ceremony got crushed between two trucks on the highway. Due to this, 13 people died and 5 others were injured.
Local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat said that the accident occurred on the northern coastal highway near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency on Sunday afternoon. All the people were returning to their homes after attending a wedding ceremony in the neighboring Parean village.
Accident happened while taking U-turn
He told that all the people were traveling in an open pickup truck. On the highway, the pickup slowed down its speed near the divider to take a U-turn and stopped. Then a truck coming in the same direction from behind hit the pickup truck hard.
The police officer further said, “The collision was so severe that the pickup truck went into the oncoming lane, where another truck coming from the opposite direction hit it again. Due to this horrific collision, more than 12 people in the pickup fell on the road.” Police said that 5 people injured in the accident are being treated in the hospital. Some of them have suffered minor injuries while some have suffered serious injuries. The causes of the accident are being investigated.
‘The pickup driver suddenly stopped the car’
However, the truck driver who was involved in the collision, identified as Deden Ibad, said he was unable to avoid the collision when the pickup suddenly slowed down to take a turn. He said, “I felt very sad to see people lying on the road. But the car ahead of me suddenly stopped as it was about to turn right.”
Emergency services personnel transported the injured victims to two nearby hospitals, but many people died from their injuries. Like India, road accidents are very common in Indonesia too, where overloaded vehicles, inadequate road safety arrangements and non-compliance of traffic rules often lead to such major accidents.
