The country’s annual defense production has reached its highest ever level of Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26. According to Defense Ministry data, the total defense production was recorded at Rs 1.78 lakh crore, which shows the growing potential of the country’s military manufacturing sector.
According to the Defense Ministry, defense production in the financial year 2024-25 was Rs 1.54 lakh crore, which increased to Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26. This is an annual increase of about 15.6 percent. If we compare it with five years ago, this increase is even higher. India’s defense production in the financial year 2020-21 was Rs 84,643 crore, which has now increased to Rs 1.78 lakh crore. That means defense production has increased by about 110 percent in five years. Whereas in the financial year 2013-14, this figure was Rs 43,746 crore, in comparison with which the domestic defense manufacturing capacity has expanded by more than four times.

This increase in defense production is believed to be the result of the government’s efforts to promote domestic defense manufacturing under the Make in India and Self-reliant India initiatives. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed happiness on this achievement. Praising this achievement, he credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the efforts of all stakeholders in the sector.

Rajnath told the figures
The Defense Minister said, ‘This achievement represents a spectacular increase of 15.6% compared to the production of Rs 1.54 lakh crore in the last financial year and a tremendous increase of 110% compared to the production of Rs 1.54 lakh crore in the financial year 2020-21 (when this figure was Rs 84,643 crore). Indigenous defense production has increased almost four times from Rs 43,746 crore in FY 2013-14.

Private sector contribution 24 percent
According to the Defense Ministry, the share of Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU) and other government units in the total defense production in the financial year 2025-26 was about 76 percent. Whereas the contribution of private sector reached 24 percent. The share of the private sector has increased from 22 percent in the last financial year and its production has reached a record level of about Rs 42,000 crore.
