India’s advisory amid increasing danger in the Black Sea, appeal to Indian sailors to exercise caution

During the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, continuous attacks are taking place in the Black Sea. In the last few days, many Indians have died in attacks on commercial ships. Regarding which the Government of India has expressed concern. Meanwhile, the government has issued an advisory for Indian citizens working there or preparing to go for job.

The government has said that commercial ships operating in or passing through this area are constantly facing the threat of missile and drone attacks. There has been an increase in such attacks since April 2026 and so far 5 Indian citizens have lost their lives in these incidents.

Indian government gave advice

The Government of India has advised Indian citizens to fully assess the security risks associated with any merchant ship before accepting employment on that route. The government said that complete information about the ship’s route, which ports it will visit, security arrangements, insurance and emergency arrangements should be obtained from the employer, recruitment agency and ship operator.

‘Inform the family about the journey and route’

The government said in the advisory that people should ensure that there is clear provision for medical facilities, emergency evacuation, repatriation and compensation in the terms of employment. Inform your family about the journey and the route of the ship and maintain regular contact.

‘Follow safety instructions’

The government said that safety instructions issued by the Indian Maritime Administration (DGMA), Government of India and related maritime authorities should be followed. In particular, it has been advised to follow the safety advisory of DGMA issued on 23 July 2026.

Along with this, it has also been said that if any Indian citizen needs consular assistance, he can contact the concerned Indian Embassy or Consulate. The Ministry of External Affairs has also shared the helpline numbers of the Indian Embassy in Russia and Ukraine Embassy of India, Russia: +7 9652773414, Embassy of India, Ukraine: +38 0933559958.
