There has been a huge decline in the number of illegal immigrants going from India to America. According to new data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), only 20,614 Indian immigrants have been caught illegally crossing the US border till May in the fiscal year 2026. This figure is 69 percent less than the same period in the year 2023. In 2023 this number had crossed 67,000.
According to the analysis report of Hindustan Times, there has been a biggest decline of 99 percent in the number of Indians trying to enter America through Mexico. At the same time, the cases of Indians illegally infiltrating through Canada have decreased by 91 percent. This means that now it has become very difficult for Indian immigrants to enter America through illegal means on both the borders (Canada-Mexico).
What is the data called?
According to CBP data, during the year 2023 (between October and May), a record 67,212 Indian immigrants were caught crossing the border illegally. At the same time, in the financial year 2025, this number will come down to about 29,000. At the same time, between October 2025 and May 2026, this number has further reduced to only 20,614. The biggest reason for this decline is the strict policies of the Trump government.
Fear of Trump or tight security?
The administration of US President Donald Trump has tightened security on the borders. When people understood that they would not be able to enter America even if they went through an illegal route, the migrants stopped going there. According to Gilbert Guerra, an expert at the ‘Niskanan Centre’, the migrants reaching the US border are now being flatly refused entry.
‘Dinky Root’ craze is over among Indians
In the initial months of the year 2023, where 30,109 Indian migrants were stopped or caught at the border. At the same time, by the month of May 2026, this number has reduced to only 417. The number of Indians entering America from Canada has also decreased by 91 percent.
2,250 cases were registered here this year. According to officials, more Indians are still trying to enter America from Canada than from Mexico. The reason for this is that a large number of Indians already live in Canada, which makes it easier for new immigrants to enter from there.
