India will become self-reliant in energy, work on Reliance’s battery factory in final stage

May 29, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Whenever there is any major change in the corporate world of India, the name of Reliance Industries (RIL) remains at the forefront. After establishing its dominance in the telecom and retail sectors, Reliance is now eyeing the clean energy market. The company’s recent annual report (FY26) is a clear testimony to the fact that in the coming times, Reliance’s biggest bet is going to be on green energy, battery manufacturing, green hydrogen and big renewable projects. The most important news in this entire masterplan is that the work on Reliance’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Giga Factory has now reached its final stage, which is going to directly change the way energy is used in the country.

Jamnagar will become the country’s largest power house

Work is going on at a very fast pace in Reliance’s huge green energy complex located in Jamnagar. The construction of the battery project under this integrated ecosystem is going to be completed soon. According to the plan, production of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) based batteries will start on a large scale in the market from the second half of the year 2026. Initially the capacity of this factory will be kept at 40 gigawatt hours (GWh), which is targeted to be increased to 100 GWh in view of the increasing future demand. From solar panels to new green fuels, everything is part of this mega project, which will reduce India’s foreign dependence in terms of energy.

Reliance eyes green fuel market

Production of green hydrogen is very important to reduce carbon emissions in the future. Reliance has set a clear timeline in this direction. The company aims to produce 30 lakh metric tons of green hydrogen every year by 2032. Apart from this, a big 15-year agreement has also been signed with South Korean company Samsung C&T. Under this, the supply of green ammonia will be started from the second half of the financial year 2029 (FY29). This is the largest long-term supply agreement ever signed by any Indian company. It will be used directly as the fuel of the future in refining, fertilizer, shipping and heavy industries.

Kutch project will provide cheap electricity

It is not possible to realize this entire clean energy dream without large-scale power generation. For this, a huge renewable energy project is being prepared in 5.5 lakh acres in Kutch, Gujarat. It is expected that power production will start from here by the financial year 2027 (FY27). This cheap and renewable electricity, available on a large scale, will reduce the cost of making green hydrogen to a great extent. Apart from this, Reliance is also going to increase its solar manufacturing business from 10 GWp to 20 GWp annually. Besides, a new solar power project of 6 GWp is also being prepared in Andhra Pradesh.
