India learned a big lesson from Anthropic’s AI ban! Sarvam AI CEO said – We have to create our own AI technology

June 14, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The US ban imposed on Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for foreign nationals has sparked a new debate in the AI world. Regarding this, Sarvam AI co-founder and CEO Pratyush Kumar has said that this incident is a big warning sign for India. He believes that merely having access to foreign AI technology is not power. If the control of the technology is in someone else’s hands, then its use can be stopped at any time. In such a situation, India will have to emphasize on developing its AI capabilities.

Big difference between access and ownership

Pratyush Kumar said on social media platform X that many companies assume that having access to an advanced AI system is a competitive advantage. But the case of Anthropic has shown that if you do not have control of an important technology, then access to it can be taken away at any time. He said that companies and countries become vulnerable when their critical technological needs depend on external decisions. According to him, AI users have to understand that merely adopting a technology is not beneficial, but having control over it is equally important.

Ok, so here is my take on the Fable ban, sovereign AI, Sarvam, etc.

The event is interesting as it has implications from many perspectives.

For AI users, it is clear that you should not confuse access with ownership, or adoption itself as advantage. And if the most significant

New wall may rise in AI industry

Pratyush Kumar said in his post that in the coming time, AI industry may get divided into two parts. On one side, there will be AI tools for general use, which will be available to everyone, while on the other side, strict controls can be imposed on the most powerful Frontier AI models. He said that AI Labs will present their products at different levels, where common AI services will be available openly but cutting-edge AI models will be available with limited access. According to him, this can be a good business model for companies, but there will also be a danger of increasing technological inequality. This is why he expressed the need for more countries and companies to develop their AI capabilities.

Why has Sovereign AI become a big issue?

Both Pratyush Kumar and Zoho co-founder Sridhar Vembu believe that technology has become an important part of national security and sovereignty in the modern world. Anthropic had revealed that the US government had instructed it to close access to the Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models to foreign nationals. The company said it was forced to comply with the order, although it felt the available evidence did not justify such a blanket ban. After this incident, the question has become stronger in India whether the country should depend only on foreign AI platforms or develop its own indigenous AI technology.
