
Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita will visit Iran on July 3, 2026. Both leaders will represent India at the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei. The Government of India has decided to send a high-level delegation to the funeral ceremony.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this visit reflects the civilizational ties and deep people-to-people ties between India and Iran. The ministry said that these historical and cultural ties form a strong basis for political and economic cooperation between the two countries. Through this visit, India has also emphasized the importance of its traditional and friendly relations with Iran. Earlier, there were reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also been invited, but there was no confirmation from the Iranian side about inviting any foreign head of state.
Ayatollah’s mortal remains will be kept in Grand Mosala
According to Iranian officials, Ayatollah Khamenei’s body will be kept in Tehran’s Grand Mosala Complex on July 4 and 5 so that the public can pay their last respects. After this, a state funeral procession will be taken out on 6th July. The Iranian government has also declared a public holiday in Tehran province during the mourning period. The funeral process will be completed with burial in Mashhad on July 9.
India-Iran relations strong
Diplomatic contacts between India and Iran have remained constant in recent months. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently visited India and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Met Jaishankar. Following Khamenei’s death, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign the condolence book. Apart from this, contact remained between the top leadership of the two countries even during the recent conflict in West Asia.
