After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, the Indian team started a new era under the leadership of a new captain. Similarly, after becoming T20 champion for the second consecutive time in 2026, Team India started its journey with a new captain. But it seems that this change is causing personal harm to the new captains. While Suryakumar Yadav’s form deteriorated completely, the start of the new captain Shreyas Iyer was also not good. Iyer, who was making his captaincy debut against Ireland, got out after scoring only 3 runs in the first T20 match.
The T20 series between India and Ireland started on 26 June in Belfast. While everyone was waiting for the debut of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, eyes were also on Shreyas Iyer. Suryavanshi did not debut but Iyer got a chance to make his debut as T20 captain. Not only his debut as captain, but this match was also special for Iyer because he returned to the Indian T20 team after being out for 936 days and 63 consecutive matches.
But this comeback and debut match as a batsman was not at all good for Iyer and he failed in the very first exam. In response to the target of 183 runs set by Ireland, Team India made an explosive start in the powerplay on the strength of Abhishek Sharma but from the other side Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan were out early. In such a situation, Iyer had to come out to bat in the powerplay itself.
But he too could not last long and was out in the sixth over itself. Fast bowler Matthew Hollard, playing his first match, got Iyer caught out at deep square leg. Iyer faced 7 balls and could score only 3 runs. In this way the first match proved to be very bad for the Indian captain.
