IND vs AFG: The worse the umpiring, the more useless the captaincy… Afghanistan’s loss on 2 consecutive balls.

June 7, 2026 by Uma Shankar

In a test match, a lot of hard work has to be done for each run and each wicket. If this Test match is being played in the month of June in the scorching heat of about 40 degrees Celsius, then this hard work seems more difficult. This is especially troublesome for bowlers and fielders. In such a situation, if even a single chance of a wicket slips away, it is very disappointing. But in the India-Afghanistan test match, this was too much. On the second day of this match, the umpire gave wrong decisions on two consecutive balls and both times Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi missed the wicket opportunities by not taking the review.

Even on the second day of the match being played between India and Afghanistan in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, Afghanistan did not get the support of the umpire. On Sunday, June 7, the second day’s play started with the 86th over of the Indian innings and in the very next over, Afghanistan took the second new ball. Soon, Afghanistan also got the benefit of this, when an appeal for LBW was made against Indian captain Shubman Gill in the 89th over. Gill had completed his century on the first day itself and was leading the innings.

There was an appeal for LBW against Gill on the fourth ball of all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who was bowling the 89th over, which was declared not out by Bangladeshi umpire Sharafuddaula Saikat. Afghan players discussed for a long time but captain Hashmatullah Shahidi ultimately did not take DRS. Immediate replays showed that the ball was hitting the stumps. In such a situation, if the umpire had given out, even DRS could not have saved Gill. If Afghanistan had taken DRS then they would have got the wicket of Gill. He was then on 108 runs.
