IND vs AFG Test: Umpire made a mistake, Afghanistan also made a mistake, but Team India’s happiness did not last long.

June 6, 2026 by Uma Shankar

After November 2025, Indian cricket fans had to wait for 6 months for the return of Team India in Test cricket. This wait ended with the Test match between India and Afghanistan starting on Saturday, June 6. However, in this match which started at India’s 31st Test venue in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, the Indian team did not get the start which was expected and possible because the Afghanistan bowlers bowled tightly. Due to this, Team India lost the wicket of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal even before 50 runs.

After 8 years, in the scorching heat of about 40 degrees in Mullanpur and in the presence of very few spectators, the teams of India and Afghanistan were face to face. Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first, which was as per the wishes of the Indian team and its fans. In such a situation, it was believed that India’s top order would defeat Afghanistan and big scores would be seen. But when the match started, the story of the first hour was completely different.

Afghanistan’s fast bowlers bowled on a straight line and did not allow the Rahul-Jaiswal pair to play freely. The effect of this was that within just 12 overs, Afghanistan created 3 wicket chances, out of which it lost 2 due to its own and umpire’s mistakes. First of all, in the sixth over, the ball hit the edge of Jaiswal’s bat and went past the gully fielder. This was a difficult opportunity to catch.

Then in the 11th over something happened which shocked. Rahul tried to cut the first ball of this over but the ball took the edge of the bat and went to the wicketkeeper. The Afghan players appealed but the umpire did not give it out, even though the sound of the ball hitting the bat was also heard. The umpire certainly made a mistake but Afghanistan shot themselves in the foot by not taking DRS because the replays clearly showed that there was contact between the ball and the bat.

Rahul was then on only 16 runs and India’s score was only 37 runs. However, this relief and happiness of Team India did not last long. On the last ball of the very next over, Jaiswal was out while trying to play the leg stump ball of Mohammad Salim. The ball hit his bat and went into the gloves of wicketkeeper Asfar Jazai in the form of an easy catch and this time the umpire also made no mistake in giving it out. Jaiswal missed the opportunity to play a big innings and was out after scoring 24 runs, while Team India’s score was only 41 runs.
