June 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

High cholesterol is becoming a common health problem today. Especially increase in bad cholesterol (LDL) can increase the risk of heart diseases. Generally, to control it, the help of lifestyle changes, balanced diet and medicines is taken. However, scientists are constantly looking for new methods that can help in controlling bad cholesterol in the body. Meanwhile, scientists from IIT Bombay, IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata have developed a new technology, which can prove helpful in reducing the level of fat and bad cholesterol in the body.

Researchers believe that in future this method can help in reducing the risk of heart diseases. However, this technology cannot be used as a treatment for common people right now. Any new technology has to go through several stages of trials before reaching patients. In such a situation, it is important to know what was found in this study, how this new method works and how it works with the existing ones. cholesterol How different the treatment can be.

What new method was discovered in the study to reduce bad cholesterol?

Scientists from IIT Bombay, IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata have developed a small peptide named KTDP. According to researchers, this technique can prevent the fat present in liver cells from reaching the blood. If you understand in simple language, the liver packs some of the fat produced in the body and sends it into the blood, due to which the level of bad cholesterol and triglycerides can increase.

In the study, tests were conducted on lab-prepared liver cells and zebrafish. It was found that with the help of this technique, the level of bad fats and triglycerides in the blood was reduced by about 50%. Researchers also found that instead of being stored in the body, fat started being used as energy. However, it is yet to be tested on humans.

How different is this method from existing cholesterol medicines?

Current cholesterol medications usually reduce cholesterol formation in the body or help remove bad cholesterol from the blood. At the same time, this new technology tries to prevent fat from reaching the blood in the beginning.

However, this method is still in the initial stages of research. Therefore, it is too early to say whether it will be able to replace the current treatment in future or not. For this, many more tests are yet to be conducted on humans.

What to do to keep heart health and cholesterol under control?

To control cholesterol, take a balanced diet and limit the consumption of fried, processed and high sugar items. Exercise regularly and try to maintain a healthy weight.

Apart from this, avoid smoking, get enough sleep and keep getting regular health checkups done. If cholesterol level is increased, then take treatment and medicines as per the doctor’s advice.
