If you get likes, views and comments, you are not happy, otherwise you feel lonely… Survey reveals the mood of Gen Z.

July 30, 2026 by Uma Shankar

The mood of today’s youth and Gen-Z and their own value in their own eyes depends on how many likes, views or comments their social media posts get. This has come to light from a sociological study. Many young women feel uneasy, rejected or lonely when their posts do not receive the expected number of likes, views or comments. This information has come out in the study of Dr. Jyoti Sidana, Professor of Sociology Department of Government Arts Girls College, Kota. This study was conducted for 25 days under his supervision.

This survey was conducted to understand the psychological and social impact of digital dependence. In this, 141 undergraduate and post-graduate girl students from different colleges were included. According to the study, 43.9 percent people believed that social media has increased the culture of exhibitionism. Whereas 41.5 percent people felt that this has affected their real identity. At the same time, 14.6 percent people said that this has given rise to unnecessary expenditure.

I feel troubled by trolling.

According to the survey, the pressure to maintain a “perfect image” online was affecting the self-confidence and mental health of youth. It was also found that 61 percent people felt stressed or troubled by negative comments or trolling on social media, while 39 percent people said that such things had no effect on them.

Sidana said Generation Z is the first “digital native” generation to grow up with the internet and social media. While it provided unprecedented technological opportunities, it also faced growing challenges such as anxiety, comparison to others, loneliness and digital dependence. He said, “If digital balance is not created in time, its impact on mental health and social relationships can be deeper.”

‘Real relationships are important for emotional health’

The study advised to do digital detox regularly, talk more face to face with family and friends, not judge your worth by likes and followers and maintain a balance between digital and real life.

Sidana said, real relationships and interactions are the strongest foundation for emotional health. Only face-to-face conversations provide long-term emotional support, not virtual conversations.
