Delhi High Court has given big relief to Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan. While protecting the personality rights of Varun Dhawan, the court has ordered the removal of several AI-generated deepfakes showing him in inappropriate scenes with his female co-stars and e-commerce listings selling goods in his name without permission. In the order given on May 29, Justice Jyoti Singh said that Varun Dhawan has made out a prima facie case for imposing a unilateral interim stay in a case filed by him. In this way, the court stopped many websites including e-commerce platforms and social media intermediaries from violating the publicity and personality rights of Varun Dhawan.
The court said that the plaintiff is entitled to protection from the spread of AI generated pictures showing Varun Dhawan in wrong scenes. Such bad content is damaging their image and can make people believe that what is shown may be true. The court directed Google, Meta Platforms and X Corporation to provide Basic Customer Information (BSI) of infringing social media users.

He also said that some booking agencies are making false and unauthorized claims of hiring Varun Dhawan for performances and events.
No use of name, picture and voice without permission
Dhawan further sought protection from the spread of pornographic content generated by artificial intelligence and deepfakes showing inappropriate clips with female co-stars. In the petition, Varun said that he has secured trademark registration of his name and signature.
