June 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Rajkumar Hirani On Earning From A Film As Producer: Whenever a film earns bumper at the box office, it is discussed everywhere, but do you know that not even half of the collection the film makes goes to the producer’s account. Only 35 to 40 percent of the total collection reaches the producer. The entire math of the film’s earnings has been explained by veteran director Rajkumar Hirani.

Rajkumar Hirani In a conversation with YouTuber Sanjay Arora, he said, “The first major source of a film’s earnings is ticket sales. But when you talk about a film doing a business of Rs 100 crore, then 50 percent of it goes to multiplexes. So when you read the figure of earning Rs 100 crore, the producer does not even get Rs 50 crore out of it.”

A large portion goes to theater owners

Hirani further said, “There are different calculations of earnings. In the first week, theaters take 50 percent share, in the second week they take 60 percent and in the third week they take 70 percent. That is, a large part of the earnings goes to the theater. This happens because as the weeks pass, the number of audiences in theaters decreases. There is also a distributor share and advertising cost. Therefore, the producer has The money that comes is 40 percent, sometimes even 35 percent.”

Rajkumar Hirani says that when it comes to a business worth Rs 100 crore, the entire money does not go to the producer, rather if Rs 100 crore is earned at the box office, then the producer gets only Rs 35-40 crore.

OTT and music rights are also sources of earning. These are the only 3-4 sources from where the producer has to bear all his costs. There are also marketing expenses.”
