If tax is imposed on American companies, I will impose 100% tariff, Trump threatens European countries

June 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

President Donald Trump threatened on Friday that whichever country imposes tax on digital services of American companies, 100% tariff will be imposed on the import of its goods. In a post on social media, Trump targeted European countries, which he said were discussing imposing taxes on American companies. Trump wrote, this statement should be understood that whichever country imposes such a tax, 100% tariff (import duty) will be immediately imposed on all types of goods sent to America.

He further said that this new tariff will replace the already decided trade agreements. Trump said that this penalty would be imposed on any country that implements such a tax, although he specifically mentioned European countries in his post.

Threat of new trade war

Due to Trump’s warning, there is a possibility of trade war starting again between America and Europe. Many countries are considering imposing a digital services tax to ensure that multinational technology companies pay taxes in the markets from which they earn the most money. This issue has been a major cause of disagreement between Washington and many European governments. America argues that such taxes specifically target American technology companies.

Controversy over digital service tax

Digital services tax is typically levied on revenues earned by large technology companies from online advertising, digital marketplaces and other Internet-based services within a country. These are generally designed to apply only to the world’s largest and most established tech companies – like Meta, Alphabet and Amazon, which are American companies.

America has been continuously opposing these taxes. He says that this has a negative impact on American companies. On the other hand, many countries argue that the existing international tax rules have not kept pace with the digital economy and they need to be updated to ensure a fair tax regime.
