Under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, the Indian team won the first match of the ODI series against England. The Indian team has taken a 1-0 lead in this three-match series. Captain Gill himself played a special role in this success of Team India and scored the maximum 80 runs. Now Gill has a chance to win the series as captain. Not only the series, but he also has a chance to become the number-1 batsman in ICC’s ODI rankings. Both these things can happen in the second ODI match.
In the first match of the ODI series played in Birmingham, where all the attention was on the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, captain Shubman Gill showed a strong game with the bat. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply in front of Gill and Team India looked to be in trouble. But captain Gill took charge of the team by scoring 80 runs in just 75 balls. However, he had to return after retiring hurt, which definitely increased some tension.
Even though Shubman Gill missed it due to injury after coming close to his century, he got the benefit of this innings in ICC rankings. ICC released the latest rankings on Wednesday, July 15, a day after the match. Gill got 12 rating points in the ranking of batsmen in ODI, due to which he now has 803 points.
Although Gill is still in second place, his difference from New Zealand’s Darryl Mitchell, who is at number one, is only 11 points. In such a situation, he will have a chance to become number-1 in the second ODI to be held on 16th July in Cardiff. However, Darryl Mitchell is currently in West Indies with the New Zealand team, where a 5-match ODI series is going on. In such a situation, the competition for number-1 between Gill and Mitchell will continue for the next few days.
Not only the number-1 rank, but the Indian captain also has a chance to win the series. Under the captaincy of Gill, Team India has so far won only the ODI series against Afghanistan. In such a situation, if he is successful in doing this in England, it will be a big achievement. Gill and Team India will try to complete the work in the second ODI in Cardiff itself. If this does not happen then the matter will reach till the third ODI.
