The dispute between India and Pakistan regarding the Indus Water Treaty has once again intensified. Pakistan’s Climate Change Minister Musaddiq Malik threatened India and said that if anyone tried to stop Pakistan’s share of water, we would cut off those hands. India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in 2025.
Musaddiq Malik said in a press conference with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar that the Prime Minister of the neighboring country is saying that he will not allow even a single drop of water to enter Pakistan. He said that Pakistan will protect its share of water at any cost and will not allow anyone to stop its water. This statement of Malik was aired on Pakistani channel 24NewsHD. However, this could not be independently confirmed.
Pakistan has already made it clear that if anyone tries to encroach on our water, it will be given a befitting reply.
We have categorically declared that we will cut off anyone who touches our water.

Claim of implementation of Indus Water Treaty
In the press conference, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that the Indus Water Treaty is still in full force. According to him, India can neither end this treaty alone nor make changes in it. He claimed that Pakistan’s stand on this issue has received support at the international level and India’s argument has not been accepted on any global platform. Tarar said that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir have already said that water is both our lifeline and our redline. Tarar said that Pakistan’s water rights are protected under international law.
Pakistan also announced that it will organize the first international seminar on Indus Water Treaty in Islamabad on Tuesday. It will include legal experts, water experts and many foreign representatives. Legal and technical aspects of the treaty will be discussed in detail in the conference.
The treaty came into force in 1960
The Indus Water Treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 under the mediation of the World Bank. Under this, the water of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers belongs to India, while most of the water of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers goes to Pakistan.
This treaty remained in force despite many wars and long tensions between the two countries. But after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025, India suspended the treaty. India says the treaty will not be reinstated until Pakistan credibly and permanently stops cross-border terrorism. Earlier, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has also said that if Pakistan’s water security is threatened, then it will not shy away from taking military action against India.
