‘I was wrong’, big U-turn of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, admits AI will not eat up jobs!

May 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on AI: Ever since the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), people have always had the same fear that their jobs will be lost with the advent of AI. When tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT became popular, many tech leaders also warned that millions of white-collar jobs could disappear rapidly, but now the big leaders of the tech world are changing their tune. Speaking at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference in Sydney, Sam Altman said his earlier fear of job losses due to AI was misplaced. He told that AI has not taken away the jobs of as many people as were expected to be lost due to AI, that is, this figure is less.

I’m glad I was wrong: Sam Altman

Sam Altman said that the company misjudged how society and the workplace would react to technology. Altman said, I am glad that I was proved wrong about this. I thought the impact of the loss of entry-level white-collar jobs would have been much greater than it actually has been. Sam Altman said, we really care about people and also said that it is still difficult to completely replace human interaction with software.

This experience changed his understanding of how jobs might change in the era of AI. Instead of jobs suddenly disappearing, Sam Altman now believes work may simply change, with human communication, creativity, decision-making and emotional intelligence continuing to play a key role. He said, I do not think that we will see the end of jobs here as some companies in our space support or talk about.

Jeff Bezos also changed his tone

Altman is not the only tech leader who is changing his tone on earlier warnings about AI. Jeff Bezos has also said that instead of completely replacing workers, AI will make them more productive. In an interview with CNBC, he rejected claims that professions like software engineering or radiology would disappear due to AI tools. According to him, AI can help in automating some tasks, but humans will still be needed to identify problems, think creatively and design systems.
