The Y Plus security given by the Central Government to Aam Janata Unnayan Party’s MLA and Chairman Humayun Kabir has been withdrawn. This decision has been taken on the orders of the High Court on Wednesday. Apart from this, the security given to 41 BJP candidates and other people of West Bengal by the Home Department of the Central Government has also been withdrawn. On lack of security, Humayun Kabir said that he will demand from the Central and State Government for his security, because he is in great danger.
He also said that although the Central Government of West Bengal on Monday night issued an order to withdraw the security of 41 BJP MLAs and others, the security of Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and Naushad Siddiqui has not been withdrawn. Humayun Kabir said that there are many threats against him, hence he will write a letter to the state and central government together and apply for his security.
After the court order, the security of not only the leaders but also many other people has been reduced. The security of former cricketer Sourav Ganguly has been reduced from Z category to Y. Ganguly was getting Z+ security for about 3 years, but now it has been reduced.
Ganguly gets Z+ security in 2023
Till May 2023, Ganguly had ‘Y-category’ security. At that time, three personnel of the Special Branch of Kolkata Police, including two armed officers, were deployed for his personal security. Additional police personnel were also deployed at his residence.
In May 2023, the Mamata Banerjee government increased Ganguly’s security to ‘Z-category’. After this increase in the security category, the number of officers deployed for his personal security increased to between 8 and 10. Security arrangements were expanded at his residence also.
Whenever Ganguly traveled somewhere, a police pilot vehicle would escort his convoy. Overall, his security cover consisted of 30 to 35 personnel. With the recent decision, these security arrangements have been reduced, bringing them back to ‘Y-category’ security.
When Humayun Kabir rebelled against TMC and announced to contest elections by forming his own party, the central government gave him Y+ security. He is now an MLA and after this decision only two gunners can remain from him.
changes after change of power
Since the change of government, the administration has reviewed the security cover given to many political personalities and well-known people. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has publicly said that extra security will not be extended to anyone unless there is a genuine need based on the threat.
