
Eight people died and 34 others went missing in a landslide on Friday in China’s southwest city Chongqing. In this accident, many residential buildings were buried under debris and more than 1100 people were evacuated to safe places. According to the government news agency, 10 people were pulled out alive from the debris, of which two are in critical condition.
State broadcaster CCTV said that at around 9:08 am local time, rocks and soil slid down a hill in Chongqing’s Pengshui County, burying more than 10 residential buildings under debris.
Search for people trapped in the debris
Water, electricity and gas supply was cut within a radius of one kilometer of the landslide site to avoid any further problems. More than 800 rescue workers were present on the spot. According to the broadcaster, pictures released by CCTV showed a part of the mountain falling on a residential area. Several buildings were located near the landslide site, while rescue teams continued to search for people trapped under the debris.
President Jinping ordered investigation
The landslide was so fast that some people could not run away and got trapped under the debris. Chinese President Jinping has ordered an investigation. According to Xinhua News Agency, 18 people trapped under the debris have been rescued. Huge quantities of rocks and soil have fallen down the slope. More than 10 residential buildings were buried due to this.
Electricity, water and gas supply cut off
The supply of electricity, water and gas has been cut up to one kilometer from the landslide site. The pillars are buried. There were many buildings near the area buried under the debris. Rescue teams are searching the debris. According to information received from media reports, more than 800 rescue workers have been deployed. Two buildings approximately 5 and 15 storeys high have been damaged. More than 8 thousand relief materials have been sent to this area, this includes tents, folding beds and emergency kits for families.
