How much will be the toll for a ship in Hormuz? Oman-Iran meeting to finalize rates

June 23, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Will ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important sea route, now have to pay new fees? Amidst this question, Oman and Iran have started talks to decide navigation, maritime services and related costs in this strategic waterway. After the meeting in Muscat, both the countries announced the formation of a joint working group, which will further discuss the management of ship movements and a possible toll system. Any change in this route, which is very important for global oil supply, can affect the world’s energy market and shipping industry.

Discussion on the future of the Strait of Hormuz

According to Reuters report, in a joint statement issued after the talks in Muscat, Oman and Iran said that they will continue to discuss the future governance of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, maritime services and their associated costs. For this purpose, a joint working group will be formed with the participation of the foreign ministries of both the countries. Besides, consultations will also be held with other coastal countries and concerned parties of the Gulf region. This initiative is being taken forward under the MOU signed last week.

Announcement after the visit of Iranian leaders to Oman

This agreement came to light after the visit of Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Kalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Oman. The two leaders met Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman and also held talks with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi. During the talks, both countries emphasized on managing maritime activities in the Strait of Hormuz and strengthening regional cooperation. The joint statement said that both sides are committed to ensuring safe maritime movement in accordance with international law.

Emphasis on maintaining safe and open sea lanes

Oman and Iran, which share the Strait of Hormuz, said in their statement that they are committed to keeping the waterway safe and open for international navigation. Both countries stressed the need to promote maritime security, freedom of navigation and regional stability. The statement also reiterated that safe movement of ships will be ensured in accordance with international law, while both countries will maintain sovereignty over their respective territorial waters.
