How does kidney disease become a threat to the heart? Know why this happens?

July 24, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Kidney is that organ of the body which works to remove toxins-extra water and purify the blood. Apart from this, it also plays a role in controlling blood pressure. But if his health is not good then things can go awry. If kidney health is not good then it does not function properly and toxins start accumulating in the body. In this condition our heart health is also adversely affected. Dr. Amar Singhal (Director – Internal Medicine, Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute Delhi) says that kidney and heart are interconnected organs.

Very few people know how poor kidney health weakens the heart. People focus on keeping the kidneys healthy but it takes too long to notice that the health of the heart is deteriorating. Let us tell you how chronic kidney disease also has a bad effect on the heart.

Effect of kidney disease on heart

Doctor Singhal says that when the kidneys do not function properly, excess water, salt and toxic elements start accumulating in the body. This can increase blood pressure and make the heart work harder than normal. If this continues for a long time, the risk of serious problems like heart attack, heart failure and stroke increases.

Which people are at greater risk?

Apart from this, kidney disease can also cause anemia, mineral imbalance and swelling in the body, which puts extra pressure on the heart. Therefore, people who have diabetes, high blood pressure or kidney problems should get both their kidneys and heart checked regularly.

Symptoms of poor kidney health

Experts say that when kidney health is not good, symptoms like swelling of legs and face, frequent or less urination, foamy blood in urine and loss of appetite start appearing in the body. Apart from this, itching and high BP also starts in the body. Symptoms are not visible initially, hence it is also called silent disease. According to Dr., there are some daily habits which can spoil the health of the kidneys. Habits like smoking, eating too much pain killers and not drinking enough water throughout the day make the kidneys sick.

Pay special attention to these things

  1. Dr. Singhal says that with timely treatment, balanced diet, adequate water, regular exercise and taking medicines as per doctor’s advice, both the organs can be kept healthy for a long time.
  2. Eat such things in your diet which have more fiber and can also hydrate the body.
  3. Drink at least 2.5 to 3 liters of water throughout the day. Apart from this, eat such fruits and vegetables which have high water content.
