There is a lot of turmoil in the politics of West Bengal these days. On one hand, Mamata Banerjee is on the streets in protest against the attack on her nephew, while on the other hand, clouds of rebellion are looming in her own party Trinamool Congress (TMC). After coming to power, the internal discord in TMC has taken such a form that discussions about ‘Maharashtra Model’ have intensified.
On Tuesday, about a month after the formation of the new government in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee took to the streets against the Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari government. They staged a protest at Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Kolkata. The reason for this demonstration is the demand for action against the attack on his nephews and MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. Mamta alleges that the present government has failed to take action against the attackers.
Although Kolkata Police did not allow Mamata Banerjee to protest, she did not agree and stood firm on the strike. A large number of his supporters were also with him in this protest. Mamata Banerjee said from the protest site, “MLAs are being threatened from door to door. We have a recording of the conversation related to the attempt to attack Abhishek Banerjee, in which things like ‘kill-kill’ can be heard.”
Is TMC breaking?
The bigger news than Mamata Banerjee taking to the streets is the growing rebellion within her party. According to reports, disgruntled TMC MLAs are holding separate meetings and claiming that they have the support of around 50 to 60 MLAs.
Why is there rebellion in TMC?
This entire controversy has started regarding the selection of Leader of Opposition in the Assembly. The name of Shobhandev Chattopadhyay was proposed as Leader of Opposition. On which it was alleged that the signatures of many MLAs in the letter containing this proposal were fake. In this matter, two TMC MLAs complained to the Assembly Speaker, after the complaint CID investigation started. Both the MLAs who complained have been expelled from the party.
After the expulsion, resentment within the party has come to the fore and voices of rebellion have intensified. According to sources, when Mamata Banerjee called a meeting of MLAs on Sunday, only 20 MLAs attended it. About 60 MLAs stayed away from this meeting and are working on a different strategy.
What is the upcoming ‘Maharashtra Model’ being mentioned?
In political circles, this development in Bengal is being named ‘Maharashtra Model’. In fact, in Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde had rebelled against the Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena and formed a separate faction taking many MLAs with him. Later the same group had also staked claim on Shiv Sena’s election symbol. Now the same model is feared to be repeated against TMC in Bengal.
What do the rebel MLAs want?
Suspended TMC leader Riju Dutta has openly shown rebellious attitude, he said, “All the rebel MLAs are going to the Speaker. About 50 MLAs are with us and they are the real TMC. Ritabrata Bandopadhyay will be the opposition leader. Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya said, “The people of Bengal will not allow Mamata Banerjee to protest. Only TMC people are raising their voice against TMC. Right now BJP’s doors are closed for TMC.”
CID called Abhishek Banerjee
CID’s investigation in the signature forgery case has intensified. CID has sent a notice to Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and MP Abhishek Banerjee for questioning. This step is being considered as another big blow for TMC. Although Mamata Banerjee is dismissing the speculations of rebellion, but the different strategy of the 60 MLAs who stayed away from her meeting and the discussions of forming a ‘new Trinamool’ have fixed everyone’s eyes on whether Bengal will really see political developments like Maharashtra or will Mamata Banerjee control the rebellion in time.
