Without taking any major nuclear step, Iran has shaken the entire electoral mathematics of America and the global market by just taking the key of one sea route in its hands. This is Iran’s power game. By locking Hormuz, Iran has made it clear to America that if talks are to be held, the terms will be Iran’s. The closure of Hormuz is a big blow to Trump just before the midterm elections. Iran has put pressure on Hormuz at the very time when American diplomacy is at its weakest. The war with Iran proved to be a major miscalculation for American diplomacy.
Since the end of the ceasefire America Missiles are being fired on Iran and Iran is retaliating, but Iran again used its Brahmastra to subdue America and Iran once again closed Hormuz amidst landmine blasts.
This has happened at a time when mid-term elections are round the corner in America and the American people were demanding falling prices of petrol. At that very moment, Iran has stepped on the weakest vein of the American economy, i.e. the supply of crude oil. After the attacks between America and Iran, oil prices have increased by more than 3%.
Oil prices rise due to increasing tension in Hormuz
Due to increasing tension in the Strait of Hormuz and increase in crude oil prices, it is going to have a direct impact on the US mid-term elections to be held in November. Wallet and vote equation is a bitter truth of American politics, because there is an old saying in American politics that no matter what promise the President makes, the voter decides his decision by looking at the price of oil at the petrol pump.
There will be huge political pressure on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. After coming to power, President Trump had promised to bring down the price of petrol to $2.50 per gallon, but due to the Hormuz crisis, the prices of crude oil have crossed $80 to $100 per barrel, due to which the prices of petrol are increasing instead of decreasing.
Petrol becoming expensive means that there will be direct pressure on the budget of the common American family. There will be a direct hit on the pockets of the American people which will lead to increase in inflation. Due to increase in transportation costs, everything from supermarket goods to air tickets will become expensive.
There has been loss in elections due to increase in fuel prices.
History is witness to the fact that whenever fuel prices have increased in America just before elections. The ruling party has suffered huge losses in the elections. Like it happened with Jimmy Carter in 1979. As soon as Hormuz was closed, the prices of crude oil started increasing rapidly in the international market.
International benchmark Brent crude rose 3.92% to $78.99 a barrel and US crude rose 3.44% to $73.87 a barrel. According to the report of AAA, with the increase in oil prices, gas prices may also increase soon. The average price of a gallon of gas in the US is about $3.87, which is 30% higher than when the war started in late February.
The closure of Hormuz has also created a crisis for the Gulf countries, because only last week OEPC+ had approved increasing oil production. After this approval, Hormuz was closed once again and now the oil storage crisis is certain to arise in front of the Arab countries.
Iran objects to alternative route
In such a situation, Gulf countries will again have to resort to alternative routes to deal with the storage crisis, but Iran has warned ships not to use alternative routes like traveling along the coast of Oman.
Iran has expressed objection to the alternative route. Iran claims that ships passing through these routes will have to follow the instructions of Iranian authorities. Iran will take action against ships that do not follow the warning. Iran has made it clear by announcing that if any other country interferes in Hormuz, then all of them will be its legitimate targets, that is, Iran is now ready for a direct war with its neighboring countries, that is, by interfering in the system of Hormuz, any country will invite destruction of its energy resources.
Trump may suffer big loss
Iran had given proof of this action yesterday. By attacking two ships that ignored Iran’s threat, Iran has proved that sailing in Hormuz without Iran’s consent is again inviting danger. Also, no country would want to destroy its energy resources by interfering in the system of Hormuz.
If the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for a long time, it may take not just a few weeks but several months or years for the global oil market to return to normal. This situation can directly cause huge loss to US President Donald Trump in the elections.
Iran’s closure of Hormuz again is a direct election weapon. Iran knows very well that by engaging the US military in war and increasing oil prices, Iran can weaken Trump’s political base. If this lockdown is extended for a few more weeks, it will not only be Trump’s electoral defeat but also the defeat of American supremacy.
