After the recent peace agreement between America and Iran, a new discussion has started once again regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Some media reports claimed that Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz after Israel’s new attacks on Lebanon. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has termed these reports as false and said that the sea route is open and the movement of ships is continuing normally.
Earlier, in a report by the American newspaper New York Post, it was said that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has accused America of breaking the terms of the agreement. According to the report, the IRGC had said that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until Israel completely withdraws from Lebanon, the US naval blockade does not end completely and American troops withdraw from the Gulf region.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry statement
The report also said that all ships have been warned not to come near Hormuz due to security reasons. It was even said that ships not following orders could be targeted. But later Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bakai rejected these claims. He said that after the agreement with America, Iran has taken necessary steps for safe maritime traffic and the movement of ships from Hormuz is continuing.
However, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority has implemented a new rule. Under this, all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will have to submit transit requests 48 hours in advance. About 20% of the world’s oil and gas is exported through this sea route. This route was closed after the attacks by America and Israel on 28 February, due to which the prices of oil and LNG increased worldwide.
Big attack again in Lebanon
On the other hand, the fighting in Lebanon has intensified again. According to Lebanese officials, Israel carried out airstrikes on 11 cities early Friday. At least 18 people died and 33 were injured in these attacks. This attack is considered to be the biggest after the US-Iran agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that his forces will remain in Lebanon until needed and Hezbollah will have to pay a heavy price. Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi alleged that Israel wants permanent war in the entire region.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command has confirmed that it has lifted the two-month-old blockade on Iranian ports. According to maritime tracking company AXSMarine, the number of merchant ships passing through Hormuz has increased rapidly after the agreement. On June 18, 25 ships passed through this route.
