It hurts while telling jokes!
In this podcast, Rajeev Thakur became emotional remembering the days of poverty and controlling himself, he said, “My journey started in such circumstances, which I don’t even want to remember, if I tell people about it today, perhaps it will seem fabricated, because there is no one to prove it. People often say that one should turn one’s pain into stand-up comedy and sometimes I do that too, but even while telling those jokes, the pain is so much.” It is so deep that tears come on the stage itself.”
everything in one room
Rajiv Thakur says. “Just like in old Hindi movies, after my parents got married, my father was thrown out of the house. So we went from a comfortable house to a house where everything was in just one room. We had the same bedroom, the same living room and the same bathroom along with the kitchen. If one person was taking a bath, the other four had to wait outside; I felt like our house was like a public toilet.
Paying house rent was also difficult
Talking further, the comedian said that during the riots of 1984, his father’s thread factory in Amritsar was destroyed and due to this there was no stable source of income. He recalls, “My father had no work. Because of this, we could not even pay the rent. There was only one 40 watt bulb in the room. I hated that yellow light because I had never seen a tube light. Whenever I went to someone’s house, I would see the white light and would think that we too would have such a light in our house.”
it became dark at night
Rajeev Thakur says, “Electricity bill was also included in the rent and due to this, the landlord used to switch off the lights at 9 pm. It became dark in our house. After this, we had to either sleep or sit by lighting an oil lamp. We used to live on the third floor. So every day we had to carry buckets of water upstairs and my mother used to stitch clothes.”
How to climb the stairs of success?
The comedian says that sometimes he feels like he has achieved more than he ever imagined, but then he looks around and realizes that someone else has gone even further. This is human nature. After starting his career with Punjabi plays and theatre, Rajeev Thakur participated in the show ‘Hasde Hasande Ravo’ and was the finalist of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ Season 3. After this, he keeps appearing in many shows one after the other.
