
Gujarat High Court will give its verdict today in the Ahmedabad serial blast case. After 14 years of this case in 2008, i.e. in the year 2022, the lower court had sentenced 38 culprits to death. The culprits had filed an appeal in the Gujarat High Court against this decision of the lower court. At the same time, the state government had also filed a petition before the High Court for death penalty.
This case was heard in the High Court for the last several months. The accused party raised many questions regarding the investigation process, evidence and confession. At the same time, the state government demanded to maintain the decision of the lower court. Now today the High Court is going to give its decision. It remains to be seen whether the court retains the death penalty or makes any changes in it or grants relief to some of the accused.
56 innocent lives were lost in the blasts
56 innocent people lost their lives in this blast that took place on 26 July 2008. The entire Ahmedabad was shaken by 21 blasts. There were 21 bomb blasts one after the other in a span of 45 minutes. The attackers had targeted crowded areas like Naroda, Bapu Nagar, Sarkhej and Hatkeshwar. Bombs were planted in hospitals, buses, public places and markets.
38 culprits were given death sentence
14 years after this incident, on 18 February 2022, the lower court sentenced 38 convicts to death and 11 to life imprisonment. The court described this case as the rarest and said that giving death penalty is appropriate. Also ordered to give compensation to the families of those killed and injured. After this, all the convicts appealed against this decision of the court in Gujarat High Court.
The entire country’s eyes are on the High Court’s decision.
According to the law, the approval of the High Court is necessary to implement the death penalty, so the state government also filed a petition in the High Court. The High Court bench heard the arguments of both the parties in detail for the last several months.
The accused party raised many questions related to investigation, evidence and confession. The state government sought to maintain the lower court’s decision. Now today the High Court will give its decision. The eyes of the entire country are fixed on the decision of the High Court.
