The incident occurred when Ritabrata Banerjee was expelled for anti-party activities two days ago. Yesterday i.e. on Wednesday he reached the Assembly with 58 MLAs. He demanded the Speaker to make LOP. Ritabrata said that he has the support of 58 MLAs. The Speaker accepted his demand to be recognized as the leader of the opposition. Who is rebel Ritabrata Banerjee?
Ritabrata Banerjee, who first joined CPM and then TMC, started his political career as a student leader. An alumnus of Kolkata’s South Point High School, Ashutosh College and Calcutta University, Ritabrata came into limelight in the year 2000. At that time his age was around 21. He was made the All India General Secretary of SFI, the student organization of CPI(M). He led the organization for eight years. Due to his closeness to Sitaram Yechury, Ritabrata rose rapidly in CPM.
Became Rajya Sabha MP at the age of 34
At the time when Ritabrata was moving forward, it was said about CPM that at that time it was shy of promoting young faces. Despite this, Ritabrata progressed rapidly because he was close to Yechury. This was the reason that at the age of 34, he became a Rajya Sabha MP (year 2014). Three years later, i.e. in 2017, CPM first suspended Ritabrata and later expelled him.
The reason behind this was said to be anti-party activity. CPM also said that his lifestyle was contrary to the ideals of the party.

However, earlier he had said in an interview that his fight is against Prakash and Vrinda Karat. In the same year, Ritabrata was also accused of rape. A researcher accused him of exploiting her by giving her a false promise of marriage. However, Ritabrata accused the woman of blackmail and extortion. In the next year i.e. 2018, he joined TMC. Became the head of the trade union branch of the party. After joining Trinamool, Ritabrata said that Mamata Banerjee is the real leftist leader.

TMC made Rajya Sabha MP in 2024
After the resignation of former MP Jawahar Sarkar in 2024, TMC nominated him for the Rajya Sabha seat. Many big leaders lost the election in the 2026 assembly elections but Ritabrata won a landslide victory from Uluberia Purba assembly constituency. He came into limelight only after the victory. He met Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari at Banga Bhawan in Delhi. A video of their meeting went viral on social media. On this, while talking to the media, he said that it was a courtesy call. He also asked whether he should have ignored the Chief Minister’s greetings. Ritabrata said that he does not believe in this kind of politics.
Big action took place on Ritabrata on June 1
Trinamool Congress expelled Ritabrata Banerjee from the party on June 1. Along with him, the party also expelled Sandipan Saha from the party. In fact, on Monday, Shuvendu Adhikari said that Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha had informed Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose that they had not signed the TMC letter in which Chattopadhyay was named the leader of the opposition. Soon after, TMC issued a statement expelling Ritabrata and Saha from the party.
‘A conspiracy to break the party was hatched from Delhi’
Trinamool Congress accused these two leaders of anti-party activities. Without taking the name of Ritabrata, Mamata said while talking to the media that the person who was earlier in CPI(M) is doing all this. The former CM alleged on Tuesday that a conspiracy was hatched from Delhi to break the party. However, Ritabrata says that he is with Mamta but he has problems with her nephew Abhishek. He said that he has nothing to do with Abhishek. He appealed to Mamta to become the advisor of the parliamentary party. Ritabrata also said that we will face BJP boldly in the House.
