AI company Anthropic has decided to suddenly discontinue its most advanced AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5. This step has been taken following the order of the US government, in which it was asked to stop the access of these models to foreign citizens. The government has cited national security concerns as the reason behind this. However, Anthropic says that there may be a misunderstanding in the matter and it is trying to restore services as soon as possible.
Big order came in the name of national security
According to Anthropic, the US government directed it to immediately stop foreign nationals’ access to the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. The company says it was not given any detailed information about national security concerns. Anthropic believes that the government has received information about a possible “jailbreak” technique, through which the security limitations of the model can be overcome. Of particular concern is that the models may be used for sensitive tasks such as identifying software vulnerabilities. However, the company claims that this is only a limited and non-universal problem, on the basis of which action on such a large scale is not appropriate.
Features of Fable 5
- Anthropic’s newest and advanced AI model.
- Can perform complex coding, research and reasoning tasks better.
- Able to solve big and difficult questions step by step.
- Strong performance in areas such as cyber security and technical analysis.
- It was considered to be the next generation model of the Cloud series.
Features of Mythos 5
- An even more powerful “Mythos-class” model based on the Fable 5.
- Advanced ability to find vulnerabilities in complex software systems and code.
- Capable of long-term planning, deep research, and high-level problem solving.
- Can accelerate extremely difficult cyber security and technical tasks.
- According to experts, if misused, it can increase the potential of major cyber attacks.
Increasing conflict between government and Anthropic
This decision has come at a time when there is already tension between Anthropic and the US administration. According to the report, the company had refused to allow the US Army to use its AI models in domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapon systems. After this the government started the process of putting the company in the supply chain blacklist. Anthropic also recently supported greater government oversight and security regulations in the AI sector, but the company says the current action is not based on facts and transparency. Because of this, a new dispute seems to be brewing between AI companies and regulators.
Fable 5 got a shock just a few days after its launch
This week, Anthropic introduced a new AI model called Cloud Fable 5, which the company described as a model with “Mythos class” capabilities. Along with this, several security measures were also imposed to limit the use in sensitive areas like cyber security. Experts believe that such powerful AI models, if in the wrong hands, can facilitate complex cyber attacks on banking and other critical sectors. Following instructions from the US Commerce Department, Anthropic had to discontinue the services of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 worldwide. Amazon Web Services has also confirmed that the company has requested to remove access to these models for users in all regions. Anthropic says that if a similar standard is implemented across the industry, it will become almost impossible to launch new AI models.
