After running without a permanent head for almost two years, Hamas has finally got a new head. The organization has elected Khalil al-Hayya as its new political chief. At a time when Israel is continuously targeting the top leaders of Hamas and the conflict in Gaza is not showing any sign of stopping, this change is being considered not just a change of leadership but a step that will impact the direction of politics and war in the entire West Asia.
Khalil al-Hayya has long been the political face of Hamas and the lead negotiator in ceasefire talks. But as important as this election is being considered, there are equally many questions associated with it. This decision of Hamas is not only an internal matter of the organization but is considered important for the politics of the entire West Asia. In fact, in October 2024, Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar was killed in an Israeli attack.
Khalil Al-Hayya became the head
After this, the organization was being run through a committee of five people instead of any one leader. Due to continuous war and killing of top leaders, new elections could not be held. Now Hamas has made Khalil al-Hayya its new chief. Al-Hayya has long been among the organization’s senior leaders and has been involved on behalf of Hamas in several negotiations regarding a ceasefire and the release of hostages during the Gaza war. According to reports, Al-Hayya defeated former chief Khaled Mashal to take the top post.
Why are questions being raised on the elections?
This election took place within Hamas after an internal process that lasted for several months. The biggest question is regarding the transparency of elections. Hamas did not tell how many people voted, who got how many votes and how the entire election process was conducted. Some media reports said that Khalil al-Hayya defeated former chief Khaled Mashal, but Hamas has not officially confirmed this. Also, a Hamas source said that the organization did not even tell by how many votes Khalil al-Hayya defeated Khaled Mashal. For this reason, questions are being raised on the transparency and process of elections.
Senior members were not involved in the process
The second question is that this election has taken place at a time when the war is going on in Gaza and many big leaders of Hamas have been killed. In such a situation, it is believed that all the senior members of the organization would not have been able to participate in this process. However, Hamas says that the elections were held according to its internal rules. Till now the organization was being run by a leadership council of five members. Now this council will be abolished and all its members will resign, so that a new leadership can be formed.
Who is Khalil Al-Hayya?
Khalil al-Hayya is counted among the old and influential leaders of Hamas. He currently lives in Qatar and has been handling the political affairs of the organization for a long time. Israel has already tried to target Al-Hayya, but he escaped. Last year, he narrowly escaped a controversial Israeli assassination attempt on him in Doha, although one of his sons was killed in the attack. Earlier this year, another of his sons also died in an Israeli attack in Gaza.
