Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has reserved its verdict on the sentencing of BJP MLA Raju Singh, which will come on July 4. The court has already declared him guilty in this case. During the hearing held in the court today, the MLA gave a unique argument. It was said from his side that if he had studied science, this incident would not have happened. Raju Singh’s lawyer Rajiv Mohan said that the MLA was not aware of the parabolic path theory of physics. For this reason, female doctor Archana Gupta died after being shot in the air.
During the hearing, the second lawyer of MLA Raju Kumar Singh, citing the report of the probation officer, argued in the court that earlier only politically motivated cases were registered against Raju, but charge sheet was not filed in any case. He was never convicted in any case. Nor was any action taken after this incident. Raju’s family has been active in politics for a long time. His father remained the village head for 10 years. Wife was MLC. The people of the assembly say that the nature of Raju and his family has been very simple and humble. In such a situation, there is scope for improvement in Raju.
‘What happened at the farm house should not have happened’
He said that what happened at the farm house should not have happened. Raju’s wife and children were also present at the spot. He too could have been shot. Two gun cartridges were found there. Don’t know whose bullet hit the driver or Raju. Raju never tried to impress anyone by showing his influence. Deeply saddened by this incident. There is scope for improvement in the matter. If Raju had a bad character, the victims’ families would not have gone to his farm house. Raju is a 6-time MLA. My parents are old and I am ill myself. If the punishment is more than 2 years then the legislature will go away. He has always been contributing to the society. A chance to improve should be given.
Raju Singh’s lawyer Rajiv Mohan said that Raju Singh was not on the dance floor. The firing was done in the air, not at the people present on the dance floor. My (Raju Singh) mistake was that I was not a science student. Didn’t know the principle of parabolic path in physics. Archana Gupta was on the dance floor, my wife and daughter were also on the dance floor, Raju Singh did not fire towards them but towards Hawa. I remained as cautious as I could. The punishment should be less than 2 years so that the legislature does not go to jail.
Government lawyer opposed Raju Singh’s arguments
Opposing the arguments of Raju Singh and his lawyers, the government lawyer said that this incident had happened in front of the victim’s daughter and husband. The farm house was so big, the celebration firing could have been done anywhere but it was done near the dance floor only. There is no science for correct firing, one needs to read newspapers, there was no danger to them, then why were the weapons kept. Victim’s clothes and mobile were hidden. An attempt was made to destroy the evidence. They were later recovered on the complaint of the victim’s husband. After this Raju Singh ran away from the spot. Arrested from Uttar Pradesh two days later. Hide your clothes. Tampering was done from the incident site. DJ was removed. Raju Singh has no fear of law. The punishment should not be relaxed.
Let us tell you that this incident took place on the night of 31 December 2018 during the New Year celebration being held in a farm house in Vasant Kunj. Dr Archana Gupta, who was attending the party, was killed in the firing that took place during the celebration. Later the police arrested the MLA from Uttar Pradesh. On June 6, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court had convicted MLA Raju Kumar Singh under Section 304 (Part-II) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 30 of the Arms Act. However, the court had acquitted MLA’s wife Renu Singh, Rana Rajesh Singh and Ramendra Singh of all charges in the case due to lack of evidence.
