July 10, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Guru Purnima 2026: In Sanatan tradition, Gurus have been given a place after parents, because only Gurus give the light of knowledge to the society. This is the reason why in Indian culture the place of Guru is considered higher than God. The full moon day of Ashadh month every year is celebrated as Guru Purnima. According to Drik Panchang, this year Guru Purnima will be celebrated on 29th July. Fast is observed on the day of Guru Purnima. This day has been dedicated to the worship of Guru. It is believed that worshiping Guru on this day brings special blessings in life.

On the day of Guru Purnima, one must worship the Guru as per the rituals by taking bath in the holy rivers. Guru Purnima is also called Vyas Purnima. Mythological belief is that Maharishi Vedvyas was born on the full moon day of Ashadh month. For this reason, along with Guru Purnima, Maharishi Vedvyas Ji’s birth anniversary is also celebrated on this day, hence Guru Vedvyas Ji should be invoked on this day. Along with this, Gurus like Shukra Dev and Shankaracharya should also be invoked on this day.

Guru Purnima is also called Vyas Purnima

Due to the birth of Vedvyas ji on the full moon day of Ashadh month, this day is known as Vyas Purnima. Maharishi Vedvyas ji has compiled the important epic of Dwaparayuga, Mahabharata, Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta, 18 Puranas and many Vedas. Vedvyas ji also composed Brahmasutra. According to mythological beliefs, since Ved Vyas compiled the Vedas, he was named Ved Vyas.

Maharishi Vedvyas was the son of Maharishi Parashar and Mother Satyavati. According to Hindu beliefs, Vedavyas is one of the Chiranjeevis, who are still present on earth.
