Although he was born in Bengaluru, his destiny and a large part of his life was to take shape in some other city. Due to Guru Dutt’s father’s job, his entire family had shifted to Kolkata (then Calcutta). Guru Dutt’s childhood and early youth were spent in the streets of this cultural city. The art, literature and music that were in the air of Kolkata left an indelible mark on the mind and heart of young Vasant Kumar. He fell in love with the Bengali culture, lifestyle and language so much that he decided to paint in Bengali colors. Due to his deep attachment and love for this city, he left his real name Vasant Kumar forever and changed it to Guru Dutt, which sounds completely like a Bengali name.

The journey of art started from Kolkata

The influence of Kolkata was not limited to just changing his name, but the city also had a big role in awakening the artist within him. Even during the days of financial crisis, he did not break his connection with art while living in Kolkata. He enrolled in the dance academy of famous dancer Uday Shankar and learned the nuances of choreography from there. The understanding of the same art of Kolkata and the influence of Bengali cinema later made Guru Dutt a director who brought human emotions and pain on the screen in such a way that the eyes of the viewer become moist.

‘Pyaasa’ created a stir in the world of cinema

When Guru Dutt moved to Mumbai, he initially worked as a choreographer and actor. But his real skill was behind the camera. He established his foot in the industry by making light-hearted and successful films like ‘Baaji’ and ‘Aar Paar’. But his real status came to light when he made films like ‘Pyaasa’ and ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’. The dilemma, hollowness of society and yearning for love shown in these films are still considered an example of film making.

Guru Dutt, who left the world in the year 1964 at the age of just 39, may have ended his life’s journey very early, but in the history of cinema, his name, which was changed in the love of a city, became immortal forever.
