Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a sentence in the case of sexual exploitation of sadhvis in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, Haryana, has once again come out of jail on parole. Gurmeet Ram Rahim is out of jail once again for the 16th time and for 30 days. Today there are urban local body elections in Punjab and in the morning Gurmeet Ram Rahim has once again been granted parole. Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim is in jail since 25 August 2017. That day, the CBI court had sentenced Ram Rahim to 20 years in the case of sexual exploitation of two nuns.
If the 30 days parole period given to Gurmeet Ram Rahim today is included, then during his sentence he will be out of jail on parole or furlough for about 454 days. During his sentence period of about 8 years and 9 months, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been out of jail for more than a period of about 1.25 years and during this time, another question has been raised on the timing of his coming out of jail before the elections. Now the situation is that whenever any big event or program is held in Dera Sacha Sauda, before that Gurmeet Ram Rahim is given parole or furlough.
On most of the occasions, Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s parole coincides with the elections. But now Gurmeet Ram Rahim comes out of jail before the big events to be held in Dera Sacha Sauda and during these events remains present at the Sirsa headquarters of Dera Sacha Sauda.
When did Ram Rahim come out of jail?
This is the 16th time that Ram Rahim has come out of jail on parole or furlough. Earlier, Ram Rahim had come out for 40 days in the month of January this year. On 24 October 2020, Ram Rahim was released from jail from sunrise to sunset to meet his ailing mother in a hospital in Gurugram. He was given parole for 40 days before the Adampur assembly by-election in Haryana in October 2022. Apart from this, he got parole for 30 days in June 2022 before the Haryana Municipal Corporation elections and 21 days furlough in February 2022 before the Punjab Assembly elections.
He got parole for 29 days in November 2023 before the Rajasthan Assembly elections. He was out on parole for 30 days in July 2023 before the Panchayat elections in Haryana. He was given parole for 20 days three days before the Haryana Assembly elections. He was released for 50 days in January 2024 and again for 21 days on 13 August 2024. Rahim was released from jail before the Parmarth Diwas celebrated in Dera Sacha Sauda in October 2024.
Last year in 2025, he also came out of jail to celebrate his birth month on 15th August. In January 2025 itself, just before the Delhi Assembly elections, Ram Rahim was given parole for 30 days. During the foundation day of Dera Sacha Sauda on 29 April 2025, the entire month of foundation month was celebrated and programs were organized in Dera Sacha Sauda and during this time Ram Rahim was out of jail.
What does the prison manual say?
Dera Sacha Sauda and Haryana Government cite the jail manual as the reason behind Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s repeated release from jail. Concessions are given to undertrial and convicted prisoners in two ways. Parole means leave from jail. A prisoner is given parole only when one year of his sentence is completed. It is given on the basis of illness, death, family marriage, property dispute, farming, personal and social responsibilities or any other family reasons. A prisoner can get leave thrice in a year i.e. 91 days and can also get parole after giving reasons. The period of parole is counted towards the total sentence of the prisoner. Parole is also available to undertrial prisoners.
Whereas furlough is given to the convicted prisoners to maintain their mental balance and to connect them with the society. A prisoner is given parole only when one year of his sentence is completed. Furlough is granted only when three years of the sentence have been completed. There is also a condition that the prisoner’s conduct inside the jail should be fine. There is no need to give any concrete reason for furlough.
After the application by the prisoners, the jail management has to take a decision regarding parole within five days. Which prisoners can be given parole and which cannot be given parole, after this the DC decides that the peace will not be disturbed after the parole. Similarly, this file reaches the commissioner and then parole or furlough is given.
