Record production of 67,655 million units of ‘green electricity’
In the financial year 2025-26 Gujarat has set a new record by succeeding in preventing 49.79 million tonnes (mtCO₂e) of carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere in just one year. This is the largest carbon reduction recorded in a single year in the state’s history. The main reason behind this historic achievement has been the rapid expansion of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources in the state’s energy sector. As a result, Gujarat has also recorded a record production of 67,655 million units of green electricity in just one year.
Reduction in emissions by 179 million tonnes in 5 years
As a result of the state government’s green energy initiatives, environment-friendly policies and rapid expansion in the renewable energy sector, Gujarat has been able to avoid a total of 179 million tonnes of carbon emissions in the last 5 years. According to statistics, about 442 million tonnes of greenhouse gas is emitted in the state every year. In such a situation, registering a reduction in carbon emissions equal to about 40 percent of the total annual emissions during the last five years is a proof that Gujarat has presented a strong model of sustainable and green development by striking an effective balance between development and environmental protection.
According to experts, use of green energy on a large scale reduces the consumption of coal and other fossil fuels, which directly reduces carbon emissions. This is why today renewable energy is being considered the most effective means of combating climate change across the world.
How is the issue of carbon emissions related to the life of the common man?
Carbon emissions are not just an environmental issue, but it is an issue directly related to the health, climate and lifestyle of the common people. Increasing carbon emissions in the atmosphere increase problems like global warming, extreme heat, irregular rains, floods and droughts. In contrast, the use of green energy reduces pollution, improves air quality and also reduces health risks. Environmental experts believe that clean energy sources like solar and wind energy will not only become the basis of environmental protection in the future, but will also prove to be important pillars of energy security and economic development.
Share of green energy increased in power generation
Through this spectacular achievement, the state government has given a clear message that Gujarat is not limited to just meeting the set targets, but is setting new standards against climate change. Policies like ‘Integrated RE Policy 2026’, ‘Green Hydrogen Policy’ and ‘Gujarat Pumped Storage Policy’ implemented in the state have given a new impetus to the campaign of environmental protection.
It is the result of continuous efforts of institutions like GUVNL (Gujarat Energy Development Corporation Limited), GEDA and GPCL under the strict monitoring of the Energy Department that today the share of green energy in the power generation mix of the state has increased rapidly, which has led to a huge and positive improvement in the air quality.
Gujarat’s big role in Net Zero Mission
This achievement of Gujarat is not limited to the state alone, but it provides a strong foundation to India’s global climate goals and the resolutions made under the Paris Agreement. Today, Gujarat is emerging as an influential model for the country in the direction of green energy and sustainable development.
