Govind Dev Giri blamed SBI, said- we had to suffer the consequences of the bank’s shortage.

July 6, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Treasurer of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Swami Govind Dev Giri Maharaj has defended former General Secretary Champat Rai and said that his only mistake was that he trusted people close to him too much. Along with this, he also targeted the banks for theft of offerings.

treasurer lord Govind Dev Giri Said, “Major changes will definitely be made in this. I also want to say that the State Bank of India (SBI) should not have shirked its responsibility in this matter; since this work was done in collaboration with SBI, they also had a responsibility, and we have had to suffer the serious consequences of their lack of supervision.”

SBI should have lodged FIR

He said that in my view, the FIR should have actually been lodged by SBI and not by our Trust, although the well-intentioned members of our Trust themselves came forward and lodged the FIR. In fact, the responsibility lies with them… We are committed to doing this and will adopt a process in which there is no room for doubt. We will take appropriate steps, consult all concerned and completely restore the tarnished reputation of Ram Temple.

While talking to the media, Swami Govind Dev Giri described Champat Rai as a devotee who had always been working for Ram Janmabhoomi, long before much attention was paid to it.

Said this about Champat Rai

He said that I have known Champat Rai for 32 years, and his only mistake was that he trusted people close to him too much… When no one even knew about the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, he was already here, taking this movement forward… We respect him very much… It is beyond comprehension how he was able to keep such wrongdoers with him for so many years and failed to detect their conspiracies. According to me, he is impeccable. He is not a criminal, although he has committed a careless mistake.

expressed grief over theft of offerings

The Trust called the meeting amid the ongoing investigation following the initial report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned on ethical grounds, and the Trust accepted both their resignations to ensure a fair investigation. The Trust also removed Gopal Nagarkatte from the list of special invitees.

Swami Govind Dev Giri Ji expressed deep sorrow over this development and said that the Trust is saddened not only by the level of any alleged irregularities but also by the environment in which they were allowed to occur. He emphasized Champat Rai’s long service and generosity in leaving office. Senior lawyer K. Parasaran reportedly said that as per the trust’s constitution, a resignation is accepted as soon as it is submitted. Krishna Mohan has been made the interim general secretary.
