Government will take action regarding Justice Yashwant Verma! Parliament will continue the impeachment process in session

May 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Despite Justice Yashwant Verma resigning from his post, the government seems to be in a mood to take the process forward against him. According to sources, Justice Verma’s resignation has not been approved yet. It is being claimed that the government can discuss in the Parliament the impeachment to remove him from the post in the upcoming monsoon session.

The special committee investigating the entire case of Justice Verma has submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. However, the committee’s report has not yet been made public. But sources claim that the allegations in the report have been taken seriously. This is the reason that even after the resignation, the government wants to take this matter to its logical end, so that a strong message can be given for the future.

Government’s commitment to transparency

Experts associated with the government believe that the government wants to show its commitment towards transparency and accountability through this action. On the other hand, the opposition is also keeping a close eye on this issue and there are full chances of a heated debate between the ruling party and the opposition in the Parliament regarding impeachment in the monsoon session.

Earlier last week, an inquiry committee probing the allegations against Justice Verma submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The proceedings to remove Justice Verma were initiated after burnt notes were allegedly found from his official residence.

Speaker had formed a 3-member inquiry committee

Regarding the report, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that this report, presented in compliance with the statutory requirements under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, will be presented in both the Houses of Parliament at the appropriate time. Parliament will next meet in the monsoon session, which usually begins in the third week of July.

The Lok Sabha Speaker had constituted a 3-member inquiry committee on August 12 last year. Justice Verma’s official residence in Delhi caught fire on the night of March 14 last year and firefighters reportedly recovered a huge amount of burnt money in a store room of his bungalow.

Justice Verma was a judge of the Delhi High Court at that time and was sent back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court, until the matter came to light. Then an internal committee constituted by the then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna concluded that Justice Verma had direct or indirect control over the special store room where a huge amount of cash was allegedly hidden.

More than 200 MPs had signed

Meanwhile, in July 2025, more than 200 MPs had signed the proposal to remove Justice Verma. However, a judge of the Supreme Court or a High Court and the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only by Parliament under the procedure laid down in the Judges (Inquiry) Act. In August last year, the Lok Sabha Speaker had constituted a three-member judge inquiry committee to investigate the allegations.

However, amid the fear of being removed from the post by the Parliament, the Justice recently resigned from the post of judge of Allahabad High Court, due to which the dismissal proceedings against him were stopped. However, Justice Verma’s name is still registered as a judge of Allahabad High Court. However, Justice Verma would have retired on January 5, 2031, on completion of 62 years of age.
