Last year, the Assam Assembly passed the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which aims to ban more than one marriage in the state and impose strict punishment on those who enter into a second marriage or hide it while the first marriage is legally valid.
The bill, which was introduced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the first day of the winter session, will be applicable to the entire Assam, except in Sixth Schedule areas and members of Scheduled Tribes mentioned under the Constitution.
The bill defines polygamy as the practice of getting married even when one party already has a legally valid marriage or a living spouse who is not legally recognized. There was no divorce nor was the marriage annulled. In this, there is a provision of punishment of up to seven years in jail and fine if found guilty of committing more than one marriage.
