Google is now changing the way it stores Android backups. Under the new policy that will be implemented from today i.e. July 7, the company will now count your backup data only in your Google account storage. That means, all the data backed up on your Android device like call history and SMS messages will now be added to the 15GB of free storage that you get with your Google Account. With this, 15 GB storage can now be filled faster than before.
Until now, Google only counted images and videos uploaded to Google Photos as your Google Account storage. Google provides up to 15GB of free cloud storage for all accounts. However, you can take advantage of higher storage limits through paid Google One or Google AI plans.
updated Google Under the policy, all data backed up on your Android device including SMS, call history, device settings, app data and other backup information will also be included in the storage calculation. This means that you may be using up your Google account’s storage by default.
With this rollout, the company is also adding more detailed backup controls. Users will also get on-off toggles for SMS and MMS messages, call history and device settings. This will allow you to choose what to include in your backup and what you do not want to backup. You can see these new preferences on the Google Backup page in your device’s Settings.
What does a Google spokesperson say?
Although it may seem that due to this change the free storage limit of Google account will be filled quickly, but the company says that its impact will be very less. A Google spokesperson said, we have updated our policy so that all Android backup data now counts towards Google Account storage. We expect this to add only 40MB on average.
