The Supreme Court has commented on girls’ education on Monday. The court said that girls should not leave education due to non-availability of sanitary napkins and separate toilets. On this issue, the Supreme Court asked the Center to ensure that its instructions in this regard are strictly followed.
In fact, this comment of the Supreme Court has come after the Center gave its decision on January 30, in which the authorities were directed to provide free sanitary napkins to girl students and functional, separate toilets in schools. After this decision, efforts in this direction have intensified in all the states and union territories. The bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan said that it should be decided. This is in the interest of women and girls of the country.
Girls should not leave education just for this reason and should not sit at home and do household work. The bench told Additional Solicitor General Archana Pathak Dave, appearing for the Central Government, that now it is up to you to take full advantage of this and ensure that as per our decision, everyone gets benefited as much as possible.
Recognition of school should be canceled if basic facilities are not available
Ensuring gender justice and educational equality, in a landmark judgment delivered on January 30, the Supreme Court directed all states and union territories to provide free oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkins to girl students and to provide functional, gender-segregated toilets for all students in schools. The Supreme Court has clarified that if a school fails to provide these basic facilities (water, soap, toilets and pads), then its recognition can even be cancelled.
What problems do girls have to face?
Due to lack of proper hygiene and safe place to change pads, girls stop going to school during menstruation. Due to lack of basic facilities and stress and embarrassment associated with menstruation, a large number of girl students end up dropping out of studies midway. Frequent missing of classes weakens girls’ academic performance and self-confidence. Now arrangements for girls’ pads have been made in many schools.
