Residency and citizenship advisory firm Global Citizen Solutions (GCS) has released the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI). In this, Indian passport stood at 125th position among 197 countries. Last year, India was at 124th position, which means this time it has slipped one place. However, it has improved by 2 places from 127th position in 2021. This year India’s composite score was 45.1, which is the highest in the last 5 years.
The Global Passport Index differs from many other passport rankings because it assesses the overall strength of a passport, not just the convenience of visa-free travel. Most passport rankings are based only on visa-free travel, but GPI measures the strength of a passport on 3 broad parameters – global mobility, investment potential and quality of life.
How is assessment done?
According to GPI, the ranking of passport is also decided by how much it helps in living, working and investing in other countries. The overall score is based on 14 different indicators, with 50% weightage given to ‘enhanced mobility’, 25% to ‘investment’ and 25% to ‘quality of life’.
According to the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index, India ranked 125th among 197 countries. The country slipped down from 124th position in 2025, but has improved from 127th position in 2021. Its overall score has also reached the highest level of 45.1 in the last five years.

The report says that with Indian passport one can enter 26 countries without visa. According to the report, Indian passport holders get visa-free or ‘Visa on Arrival’ facility in 26 countries. These include countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Jamaica, Macau, Palestine, Tunisia, Angola and Barbados.
However, Indian citizens are still required to obtain visa for about 88 countries including America, Britain, Germany, France, China, Andorra and United Arab Emirates.
India ranked 136th in ‘Enhanced Mobility Index’
India is ranked 136th in the ‘Enhanced Mobility Index’, which is one place lower than last year. This index constitutes 50% of the total score. In this, along with the travel benefits provided by the passport, the quality of life of the country where you want to go is also considered.
India took a leap in ‘Quality of Living Index’
India has jumped 11 places in the ‘Quality of Living Index’. India, which was ranked 129th last year, reached 118th position this time. This index includes 6 major aspects like health, education and personal security. This is 25% of the total score.
India also benefits in investment index
India has also benefited in the investment index. It has improved from last year’s 97th position to 94th position. This index examines the economy of a country from the perspective of investment and business. Countries with strong and growing economies get higher scores.
