Mythological belief is that this was the day when Mother Ganga descended from heaven to earth. The day of incarnation of Mother Ganga on earth is celebrated as the festival of Ganga Dussehra. Do not make these mistakes while bathing in Ganga
Do not take a dip in the river without blessings: While taking bath in Ganga on the day of Ganga Dussehra, keep one special thing in mind. Never take a direct dip in the Ganga river. First salute Mother Ganga with both hands. Then, apologize to mother for keeping your feet in water. After this, take the blessings of Mother Ganga and take a dip in the river Ganga. By doing this one gets the full benefits of bathing in Ganga.
Women should not keep their hair open: Women should tie their hair before taking a dip in the river Ganga. It is believed that women should never bathe in the river Ganga with their hair open. It is considered inauspicious to do so. Bathing in Ganga is not advisable during periods.
Make sure to dip 5 or 7 times: While taking a dip in the river Ganga, take a dip at least 5 or 7 times. By taking the dip 5 or 7 times, one gets the full results, one gets freedom from sins and opens the doors of salvation.
Do not wash clothes: Never sit there and wash clothes after bathing in Ganga. Doing this is considered prohibited in the scriptures. Those who do this are deprived of the benefits of bathing. Apart from this, do not use soap, shampoo etc. while bathing, do not rinse and do not pass urine and feces.
Do not take a dip without wearing clothes: Always take a dip in Ganga wearing clothes. Taking bath in the holy river without clothes is not considered auspicious.
