We all know that consumption of alcohol is harmful for health and if chemicals and flavors are added to any alcohol then it becomes even more harmful. Now, considering the seriousness of this matter, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently issued notices to liquor manufacturers. The authority’s official Instagram post said, ‘FSSAI has issued notices to liquor manufacturers for allegedly non-compliance of regulatory provisions related to flavor addition and misleading age claims and directed them to explain why action should not be taken against them.
According to the post by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), this notice has been issued to Food Business Operators (FBOs) engaged in the manufacturing of alcoholic beverages licensed under the FSS Act, 2006 for violating the provisions prescribed under the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018.
What errors were detected?
adding flavors without permission
- In fact, some companies are adding such added flavors to Rum, Brandy, Gin, Malt/Grain Whiskey, Wine and Beer, which copy the natural taste of the product, whereas the rule says that these products should have only their original natural taste and aroma.
false age claims
- Some Food and Beverage Vendors (FBOs) are making unauthorized age claims by using age implication words, synonyms or indirect expressions without strictly adhering to Regulation 1.3.7 of the Alcoholic Beverages Regulations, 2018.
False disclosure of Blend Age
- Products labeled ‘aged’ do not state that the age stated is that of the youngest spirit used in the blend.
The concerned companies have been directed to ensure compliance with FSSAI regulations and submit an explanation as to why action should not be initiated against them under the provisions of the FSS Act, 2006 and the rules and regulations made thereunder.
