
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese participated in the Australia-India annual Leaders’ Summit. Here PM Modi thanked Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for the warm welcome given to him and his team in Melbourne. He said that due to Albanese’s personal interest and commitment, relations between India and Australia have reached new heights and cooperation between the two countries has increased significantly.
Both countries agreed to share intelligence against terrorism and jointly deal with new technology, terror financing, maritime security, critical infrastructure and online radicalization. Along with this, it was agreed to increase trilateral and multilateral cooperation with America and Japan.
Emphasis was also placed on joint exercises in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), information sharing and strengthening coordinated response to disasters. Here, there was agreement to increase cooperation even during crisis or evacuation operations in third countries. Both countries reiterated their commitment to work together for a free, peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
‘We deepened our practical partnership’
At a joint press conference with PM Modi, Albanese said, “We are focused on deepening and diversifying the relationship between our countries so that, as we continue to grow stronger, we have done just that in every aspect of our relationship. He said that today we have done just that in every aspect of our relationship. Through new important agreements, we are enhancing our relationship in the areas of defense and security, education, science and technology, and energy security and essential minerals. Prime Minister Modi and I have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Defense and Security Cooperation to further deepen our practical partnership. Joint declaration has been issued.”

Defense agreement agreed upon
India and Australia on Thursday agreed to an important agreement on uranium supply and a plan to strengthen defense cooperation. Amidst growing concerns regarding security in the Indo-Pacific region, both the countries are strengthening their strategic relations.
After more than a decade of negotiations, this agreement opens the way for uranium exports from Australia for India’s growing civilian nuclear power sector and takes the relationship between the two countries to a new level. The two countries signed an initial agreement on nuclear cooperation in 2014, shortly after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.
Maritime security was also discussed
In the talks between the two countries, emphasis was laid on rules-based system in the Indo-Pacific region, respect for the sovereignty of every country and maritime security. Regular talks and strategic discussions will be increased between the defense ministers of the two countries. The number and complexity of joint military exercises between India and Australia will be increased.
Better coordination and information sharing between the armies of the two countries will be strengthened. The deployment of military aircraft in each other’s country will be increased. Training, education, exchange and contact programs will be promoted between the military officers of the two countries.
