The two leaders had fruitful discussions on defence, trade, energy, critical technologies and further strengthening the strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has shared information about this talk by posting it on his social media handle X. Tagging the US Foreign Minister, he wrote, ‘Had a good conversation with the US Foreign Minister in New Delhi. We reviewed the entire scope of our ‘Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership’, which includes cooperation in areas such as trade and energy, defense and security, critical minerals and AI, nuclear and people-to-people ties, counter-terrorism measures and narcotics control.

He further wrote, ‘regional, global and multilateral issues of mutual interest were also discussed. Detailed information in this regard was given during the press conference held later. “We look forward to joining Secretary Rubio, as well as our counterparts from Australia and Japan, at the QUAD Foreign Ministers meeting on Tuesday.”
Roadmap for India-US strategic relations presented
After the talks, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio and S. Jaishankar addressed a joint press conference at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Sunday. During this, a future roadmap for India-US strategic relations was presented. Additionally, candid answers were also given on sensitive issues like changes in America’s visa policies, immigration crisis and increasing online racism against Indians in the United States.
Relations now go far beyond the boundaries of traditional diplomacy
During the press conference, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear that the relationship between the world’s two largest democracies has now gone far beyond the boundaries of traditional diplomacy. Rubio’s statement came just a day after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his four-day official visit to India. Many senior officials of both the countries were present in this meeting, including India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore.
India’s stance on trade agreements and Make in India
India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar gave detailed information about the defense and economic pillars that strengthen relations between the two countries. He announced that India and the US have recently renewed their 10-year Major Defense Partnership Framework Agreement for the upcoming term. Additionally, both countries have signed a comprehensive roadmap for Underwater Domain Awareness (UDA).
Emphasizing on self-reliance in defense production, Jaishankar said that while pursuing mutual cooperation in the defense sector, we have had in-depth discussions on the importance of keeping in mind India’s Make in India vision, as well as the strategic lessons learned from recent global conflicts. The Foreign Minister said that both the countries are committed to finalizing an interim trade agreement as soon as possible. This agreement will lay the groundwork for a larger, comprehensive bilateral trade deal in the future. A vision which was first envisioned during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to America in February 2025.
